Since I am at a slight loss for a good topic today, I thought I would update you all on my research into camps of instruction. I am currently taking a Research Seminar as a requirement for my MA and it is certainly helping me better gauge what I want this project to be (of course I am not really into academic writing as much, but we have to do what we have to in order to reach goals). I am looking at daily life in the camps as well as how they impacted the nearby community. One interesting area that has surfaced is in the historical area of History and Memory, which will involve me attempting to look at how both the soldiers and the local communities affiliated with particular camps remember the sites years later. The goal for the class is to write a 25-30 page paper that will be a journal quality abstract of (preferably) our thesis, which I hope will allow me to achieve publication on what I am doing.
On a side note relating to my research, I am also preparing a brief examination of the topic for presentation at this year’s Northern Great Plains History Conference in Duluth, Minnesota in early October. Two of my colleagues in graduate school and I will be our own panel with my thesis advisor as commentator. Needless to say, I am looking forward to the conference and the chance to gain more attention to this subject and get others researching it in other states. Well, that is it for now, I hope to have another piece out before the next installment of This Week in Blogs, and, as always, I am still looking for eager writers out there to join me. Until next time, keep researching and always remember the sacrifices of the past.
